Jesús López-Alcalde has coordinated the Chair’s evidence synthesis projects since 2020. He studied medicine at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and completed a Master’s degree in Public Health at the National School of Public Health in Madrid. He is a specialist in Preventive Medicine, Epidemiology, and Public Health, and completed a PhD at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain, in April 2026.
Before joining the Chair in Zurich, he held several positions in evidence-based guideline development and systematic reviews. He worked at the Health Technology Assessment Unit of the Government of Madrid and at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Italy. Since 2016, he has also served as Director of the Cochrane Associate Centre of Madrid and has contributed to international evidence synthesis initiatives, including the Iberoamerican Evidence Synthesis Unit and the WHO COVID Rapid Review Group.
At the Chair, he also contributes to the design, coordination, and implementation of research projects applying AI to evidence synthesis. His work spans systematic reviews, evidence and gap maps, meta-research, participatory projects, consensus processes, core outcome sets, and the identification of methodological challenges in research on digital health interventions. He also coordinates the Cochrane Complementary Medicine Satellite, hosted by the Chair.
He is particularly committed to the responsible use of AI in evidence synthesis. He coordinates the SNSF-funded project “AI to Advance Sex/Gender Analysis in Evidence Synthesis,” supported under NRP 83 on Gender Medicine and Health. His main research interests include AI for inclusive evidence synthesis, sex and gender in clinical research, digital health interventions, and complementary and integrative medicine. More broadly, he is interested in methodological innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and creating research output that is relevant and accessible to researchers, healthcare professionals, patients, and the wider public.
